HOWTH SCHOOL OF FISH: SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE

Since 1961. One Harbour. Endless Stories.

For over 65 years, the Doran family has been part of life on Howth’s West Pier. From fishing boats and fishmongering to seafood restaurants and education, seafood has always been at the heart of what we do.

Today, Sean Doran continues the family tradition established by his father Michael. A former fisherman himself, Sean has spent a lifetime working within Ireland’s seafood industry and remains passionate about sharing its stories, traditions and future.

Located in the heart of Howth’s working fishing harbour, Dorans is home to one of Ireland’s best-known fishmongers and two award-winning seafood restaurants, which sit directly on the harbour beside the fish shop.

The Howth School of Fish was created in response to growing public interest in where food comes from, how seafood is sourced, and the role sustainability and conservation play in protecting our marine resources for future generations.

What you’ll Experience

Step behind the scenes of one of Ireland’s most iconic fishing harbours and discover the world of seafood through the eyes of the people who know it best.
Hosted by Sean Doran and the team, this immersive experience combines maritime heritage, seafood expertise, harbour life and storytelling in a relaxed and engaging setting. From fishing traditions and sustainability to oyster shucking and seafood tasting, every experience is tailored to the interests of the group.
Group sizes are limited to 6-12 guests to ensure a personal, interactive experience.

Before You Arrive

The Howth School of Fish takes place within a busy working fishing harbour, so comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended.

As with all things on the Irish coast, the weather can change quickly. We suggest dressing in layers and bringing a waterproof jacket, just in case. Most of the experience takes place at ground level, with only a small number of steps required to access washroom facilities.

Tea, coffee and refreshments are available throughout the day, and we encourage guests to relax and make themselves at home.

One thing we’ve learned since launching the Howth School of Fish is that the conversations rarely end when the experience does. Guests often choose to stay a little longer, share stories, ask more questions and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the harbour.

You’re very welcome to do the same. After all, some of the best stories are told once the official tour is over.
